Taawaki Inn Hopi Art Demonstration - Filmer Kewanyama
Filmer’s journey reflects a rich tapestry of experiences and contributions. His early life took him to boarding school in Riverside, CA, where the structured environment instilled discipline that later served him well in the U.S. Army. Filmer dedicated over two decades of his life to military service, rising to the rank of First Sergeant in the Infantry and actively participating in teaching military science at the University of California-Davis and California State University-Sacramento.
After retiring, he transitioned to a role as a Federal Security/Police Officer in Phoenix, where he worked with various governmental agencies, including the INS and FBI. Seeking new paths, he moved to Prescott and pursued an Associate Degree in graphic design at Yavapai College. His passion for art blossomed during this time, leading to a role managing the college’s art gallery.
As an artist, Filmer specializes in Hopi art, creating pieces that convey deep cultural narratives. He believes in the power of storytelling through his artwork, aiming to educate others about Hopi culture in contemporary society. Filmer engages with the community by offering presentations on Hopi history and guiding tours through Native lands. Additionally, he plays a significant role in the local art scene as an advisor for the Museum of Indigenous People and the Tis Art Gallery, where he curates exhibitions. His commitment to Veteran Affairs and the Hopi Tribe underscores his dedication to service and cultural advocacy. Today, Filmer continues to inspire and educate through his art and community involvement.
